Grading Policies for Art, Math Enrichment, Music, and P.E.
During each nine weeks in the specials classes, students will earn a grade on their mastery of the subject and an assessment of their conduct. While the details of each grade are determined by the individual teacher, all of the specialists will follow these general policies.
Grade:
E: A student earns an E by completing an activity outside of class time, as listed below, and by meeting the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) standards for their grade level.
S: The student meets the AKS standards.
N: The student is working below AKS standards.
U: The student does not meet the AKS standards.
"E Options" for Upper Grades
There are several ways a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade student can receive an E in music, if they have already earned an “S”. An “E” is given based on outside of class work. The student can write a 10 sentence report on a famous musician of their choice. They should find information about the person’s history and talents. These should be written or typed based on information learned from a book or internet source. Approved E Report Topics
Another way to earn an E would be to go to a musical performance and give a 5 sentence report to the teacher. This report needs to be signed by a parent to verify the student’s attendance.
If a student enters the Reflections competition in a music category and shows the project to Mrs. Grauch, they will receive an E in class.
A final way to earn an E is to participate in an organized musical performance. Fifth graders who are BES chorus members in good standing will automatically earn an “E”. Other performances could be dance, chorus, or instrumental, and it is the student’s responsibility to let the music teacher know. This should be performed before an audience of more than just family members.
Conduct:
E: The student always participates, both individually and in group situations, maintains eye contact, listens, is respectful, and arrives prepared for class with all necessary materials (such as recorders and books for fifth graders).
S: The student generally participates, is respectful, and is prepared most of the time.
N: The student is often off-task, unprepared, and/or uncooperative.
U: The student is disrespectful, does not participate, and often requires teacher redirection.
